About stitchawaytours.com....
|
|
Stitchawaytours.com was started by Sally Black, with a little help from her friends...
Sally has worked in online travel since 1995, before most people knew what the internet was all about. She was marketing director for a major internet travel company which, coincidentally was housed on a working sheep farm which fueled her knitting addiction. During this same time, Sally spent several years as a single mom raising three kids. Even with her extensive travel business experience, she found it very frustrating planning their family vacations.
When the dot com bubble burst in the late 1990's she found herself unemployed. After a few weeks of eating ice cream, feeling sorry for herself while knitting and watching way too much daytime TV, she decided she wanted to start her own online travel company. In 1999 she remarried and with the love, help and support of her husband Brian, they launched www.vacationkids.com in early 2001 which is a web site devoted to family travel. Sally defines vacationkids as "...a web site that includes important information for parents that they'll never can find in glossy travel brochures along with professional help in booking fabulous family vacations ".
Sadly 2001 was the year of 9/11 and just as Vacationkids was getting off the ground, many travel companies went under. To the surprise of Sally, Brian and many others, Vacationkids flourished and has since grown exponentially as families demanded more quality time together. Today Sally runs Vacationkids from her home office with the help of Brian and their two border collies Winston and Murphy. She works virtually via phone, email and fax with her 6 home based agents across the country booking travel for families all over the planet. Over the years, Vacationkids has received the attention of The Yarn Shop at Kraemer Textiles in nearby Nazareth PA.
Kraemer's soon became Sally's home away from home...where she took a class with
Clara, who worked with at Kraemer's with Kate...So they all decided to get together along with fellow neighbor Phyllis (aka the Queen Mum) and Roberta's pal Maggie and voila...before they all knew it, the Kunkletown stitch & bitch group becames a weekly event. Because everyone is from the Pocono Mountains in PA, the girls politely refer to themselves as "The Pocono Purls"...pictured here with Phyllis' silky terrier Cleo.

One week during stitch and bitch, Sally was venting to the girls about a planned fact-finding trip to Mexico for
Vacationkids . Sally travels frequently throughout the year in order to stay current on the latest hotels and travel trends for her clients. The Pocono Purls weren't giving Sally much sympathy about traveling to warm and sunny Mexico, staying in a beautiful hotel, yada, yada, yada. The girls all thought her trip sounded pretty glamourous. Sally reminded them that this was a work trip and that inspecting 20 hotels in the tropical heat over the course of 3 days was certainly not her idea of a fun trip. So one of the girls asked..."You're the travel expert, what type of trip do you consider to be fun". Sally answered..."my idea of a good time would be traveling somewhere that involved knitting, meeting other knittiers and visiting yarn shops". At that point, Kate chimed in..."well if you'd like to take a knit trip like that, don't you think other people would like to take the same kind of trip?"...Eureka!...stitchawaytours.com was born!
Sally is thrilled at the idea of "stitching" together her two favorite passions...travel & knitting. Whether you're a novice kniting experienced explorer or an avid knitting armchair traveler, Sally is excited about creating all sorts of stitching itineraries
